Ever since school I’ve never really moved on from the notion that September is the start of a new term. A time for new beginnings and getting organised. I’m a bit of a closet geek and love nothing more than buying a new notepad (or four because I can’t pick one), and a new pen that makes-my-writing-look-neater-than-it-is-for-one-day. A trip to Paperchase is what my dreams are made of.
So you can imagine how much I would love a home office. A little space to call my own where I can pretend that I am important and spend my hours browsing Pinterest for quotes to make me feel inspired. For all of those spare hours that I have when Taylor just sleeps and I have nothing else to do other than write in my new notepad with my new pen.
The said space that I talk of is currently being used as a gym, and unless I suddenly turn into Sheerah overnight then there’s no way I’ll be able to shift the unused bench press, the unused cross trainer or the unused exercise bike out of there without the help of Mr M. And he likes the gym (even though he never uses it). But alas, I can dream. I can plan. And I can persuade.
So, when I have my home office…it will look something like this.

I absolutely love the Scandi look which is hugely on trend this season. It’s all about pairing simplistic design with bright colours and I think it would work really well for a home office design. The modern desk from Habitat fits right in and looks like it would be perfect for a small space.
I believe that a work space should feel uncluttered and light and personally prefer a modern feel. Using mainly black and white creates this, but I love the idea of adding pops of colour here and there and I really don’t think you can go wrong with a bit of yellow to brighten up your day (and who doesn’t need that when they’re WORKING). This chair from My Furniture is perfect and I also love the yellow memo board from Dwell.
I tried but failed to avoid Ikea for this list – you really can’t beat it for practicality and value for money. We have some of these storage shelves in our utility and they look pretty neat. I would recommend purchasing the more expensive wicker effect storage boxes rather than the cheaper plastic ones – we have both and the extra few pounds do make all the difference. The rug is also from Ikea and will be perfect for our wooden floor.
No office is complete without an inspirational quote to pick you up on those days when you seem to have lost your creative mojo. This print is from notonthehighstreet.com, which is perfect for adding personality to any room. They have a number of prints like this one which would look great above the desk.
Ask me six months from now and this home office will be mine.
