Having a baby who didn’t really enjoy her milk from day dot meant that I was pretty excited when the time came to wean her onto solid foods. In the beginning I was keen to make all of Taylor’s food myself. Not because I’m a baby food snob, but just because I had the time, and because the ingredients are part of my usual food shop – often the part that ends up going out of date and being thrown away – so I didn’t see any point in spending additional money on ready-made jars and pouches.
Five months later and I still make the majority myself, but I do have a stock of pots and pouches for when I’m out and about or I’m short of time.
Earlier this year, I attended the Baby Show at Birmingham NEC and Cow & Gate were handing out samples of their new Friends range, so I joined the long queue to pick up a couple of the vegetable pouches. When we arrived back home after a busy day I was shattered and it was time for Taylor’s dinner, so I was relieved when I remembered that I had the pouches in my bag – no heating up or washing up required. Taylor immediately approved and polished off the whole pouch. I was equally impressed – unlike some of the other baby foods I’ve tasted, these aren’t at all sweet or salty and actually taste exactly like the vegetables I purée myself. Needless to say, I went out and bought a couple more for those days when we were out and about or (let’s face it) I just wanted an easy mealtime.
The concept behind the Cow & Gate Friends range is to introduce babies to a range of distinct vegetable flavours at the beginning of the weaning journey, so that they develop a healthy appetite for veggies for life. The range begins with the starter pack which includes four single vegetable varieties; cauliflower, pea, carrot and broccoli. The vegetable pouches are made with no added salt, sugar, additives or preservatives.
I really like how the pouches are resealable, so when your little one changes their mind about cooperating with you (i.e. clamps their mouth shut, punches the spoon out of your hand, shakes their head ferociously from side-to-side) you can simply screw the lid back on and refrigerate them for up to 24 hours. This is also really handy for when you’re out of the house.
Cow & Gate have kindly offered one reader of Mum in Brum 10 x each of the four Friends flavours (40 pouches in total) as pictured above – enough to last over a month in those early stages of weaning*. To enter the giveaway just complete the Rafflecopter below. The giveaway will end on 2nd October 2015 and is open to UK residents only. Good luck!
*Based on one meal per day in addition to breakfast.
