A bright home office for 2016

January 20, 2016

I wrote about how I’ve been swooning after a bright home office last year. So with one of my new year’s resolutions to ‘get more organised’ I’ve decided to make it a reality!

When we first moved into our current home, the nook in the guest room provided the perfect space for my dressing table. But to be honest, I never really used it as I like to get pretty close to the mirror when ‘putting my face on’ and I don’t find that sitting on a stool behind a table really helps with this! So the dresser was a little redundant…

Bright home office design light blue, yellow and whiteWhen browsing Ikea online for a white desk one day, I had a eureka moment – why not just transform the dresser? And so I set about this transformation, unscrewing the mirror and drawers and replacing the stool with a Ghost style arm chair.

I wanted the space to be modern and clean, so I decided on a colour scheme of black and white, with pops of yellow, which I think goes really well with the existing sky blue wall colour and blends well with the rest of the room – by far the most colourful in our house. The desk is also next to a window, which is perfect for creating a bright home office (and for day dreaming/ staring into space, which I tend to do a lot!)

The shelf is from Wilkos (I won’t tell you about how I put it up in one of my impatient ‘don’t need a man to do it’ moments without a drill – and how it subsequently fell down again…) and I designed the artwork in Canva after finding some ideas on Pinterest. I printed all of the artwork at one of the instant photo kiosks in Boots and bought the black frames also from Wilkos. Yes, the office artwork is a little cliche…but why not? What’s not to love about an inspirational quote after all?!

Bright home office artworkI spotted the desk lamp in my favourite shop of all time – Homesense. I can’t remember exactly how much it cost, but as with all of my finds in there, it was a bargain. I also picked up this quirky magazine rack at the same time, which I think cost around £20.

I found this peg organiser in Primark for £4 which goes with the black and white theme perfectly and provides a great place for all of those ‘to do’ notes and lists which I seem to be so fond of writing.

I think all I need to finish it off would be a black and white stripey rug which would help to further separate the space from the rest of the room (and make sure I don’t get ink all over the carpet – which is pretty likely if you ask Mr M). I’d also like some more artwork for the wall to the left of me – I’m thinking some black and white family pics would finish it off a treat.

So, what do you think?

    1. Beautiful! It looks so inviting and professional. Handy that you have lots of natural light without looking directly out a window too, I find it quite hard to remain focused when I can see what’s going on outside!

      1. Haha, yes I’d definitely have this problem if I was looking straight out onto the street – I remember that from my uni days! 🙂

      1. Glad you like it! I don’t think there’s anything quite like the colour yellow to cheer up your day! 🙂

      1. Ah the trusty dining room table! I don’t think they get enough credit to be honest! But I admit it is nice to finally have a little space I can call ‘my office’ rather than having to move all of my stuff everyday so that we can eat dinner hehe x

    1. Oh it’s lovely! As I said on #HomeEtc I too am hoping to make an office space in my spare bedroom, so loving this inspiration!

      1. Thanks Lynne, I do love how light it is and the artwork kicks me into action when I realise I’ve spent far too long wasting time on social media! 😉

    1. I think this area looks just perfect, great colour choices. You have some great bargains there too.
I make artwork in Canva it is fab for that isn’t it ?

Black and White photos I think will be a perfect touch xx

      1. Thanks Kara, yes Canva really is great. And Pic Monkey too – I think I used a combination of the two. I need to get compiling those photos xx

      1. Thanks Jess! We’ll see how long it stays clutter free for eh? 😉

      1. Thanks so much! The challenge now will be keeping it this neat and tidy! x

    1. I think it’s gorgeous. I love the colour of the walls, it’s beautiful. I have been doing a lot of inspirational quote hanging recently, I don’t care if they are a cliche, they are fab! I’m also just printing off some some photos in black and white, I love the different effect that you get. This is a lovely space xx

      1. Thanks Lisa. I’m so with you on the inspirational quotes, I’m not sure how it happened but we seem to be steadily getting to one in every room in our house. But I love how they add personality and make a house a home. xx

      1. So true – they really are just planks of MDF – dressers and kitchen tables are so much more fun, especially when they’re 1950’s!

    1. I am so impressed with this makeover! The dressing table looks like it was meant to be a desk, just perfect. And you’ve made the corner very stylish now with all the accessories 🙂

    1. Extremely jealous! We just bought a office desk for our bedroom so hubby can WFH and we have some proper desk space when it’s needed…My blogging tends to be in any corner of the house at any time though…from the desk, from the kitchen, from the sofa…using laptop, phone, ipad, PC. I’d love to pretty up a blogging corner one day…just need to find one first! x Thanks for linking up to #coolmumclub

    1. What a beautiful space to work in!

I’m jealous. Our dining room’s not the best part of the house to work in so I make do with perching my laptop on the arm of the sofa. #coolmumclub

    1. This is inspired pet — I absolutely LOVE it!! 🙂 The chalky blue goes so well with the yellow and white — it looks so fresh!! Aaah I’m getting SO excited about my new office, seeing all these lovely inspirational work spaces!! SO exciting. Amazing how much more productive you can be too, when you’re in a lovely setting . Thanks for linking up #Home Etc xx

    1. I love it! It looks so fresh and professional. I adore the colour scheme and I totally agree that there is nothing wrong with an inspirational quote or two. Hope you get lots of work done there and don’t just gaze out the window, haha.xx #picknmix

    1. I love your office. What a good bit of upcycling you’ve done on the desk/dressing table. I love your magazine rack. I’d love to have a rework of my desk area. Maybe later in the year when we don’t have quite so many projects on the go.

    1. I LOVE this! I’ve been coveting many an office space lately, I’d love one myself but just don’t know if we have the space at the mo. But maybe a nook in the conservatory could work? You’ve inspired me a little 🙂

As for your space, it looks gorgeous! You’ve done a great job at keeping it simple and chic, and it’s such an effective look. Great job 🙂 #coolmumclub

    1. Ohh, it looks so beautiful!! Very nice and clean space. I love the prints and I might give it a go in Canva to see if I create something like that

    1. Beautiful room! I love the wall colour. We’ve gone for a similar colour scheme – monochrome with pops of blue and yellow – in our playroom but with all the toys and general kids paraphernalia in there it’s not nearly as calming! #coolmumclub

    1. That looks absolutely lovely! Great use of your dressing table, I currently love my dressing table but can definitely see me reusing it if I ever stop using it. Where did you get the chair from? I think it’s fab! Thanks for linking up lovely #bestandworst

    1. I love this! Such a fab little corner to call your own. I love the colours and the styling. I am very envious of your clutter-free workspace… I have a desk (nowhere near as pretty). It currently has folded laundry, 6 months worth of paperwork and a thousand toys on it…. Boooo #KCACOLS

      1. Haha, I did have to tidy it up for the photos – I assure you it definitely isn’t always this tidy! 😉 xx

      1. Thanks so much! They do have some great things in the home section of Primark every now and again – definitely worth a visit x

    1. I love it! It is so bright, but yet calming at the same time. I am desperate to find a space in my house for a bit of a home office. My cold, uninspriring kitchen is really not working for me anymore! #KCACOLS xx

    1. I am a little bit in love with your office space and a tad jealous 🙂 What a lovely space you have created. I am glad I am not the only one who attempts to do things without a man!!! xx #MarvMonday

      1. Thanks so much! I’m so bad at attempting DIY without the man – I wish I could say it’s because I’m good at it, but to be honest half of the time I have to ask for help in the end anyway! 🙂 xx

    1. I seriously love your style so much. What a beautiful space!!!! I love the colours. I’m making over our office at the moment. I didn’t even think to use canva for cheesy messages. I’ve even got the quotes jotted down already haha. It looks so lovely. x

      1. Thanks so much Chloe. Good luck with your office makeover and getting creative in Canva! xx

    1. I love it. Wish I had a space I could do this in. I’m also a fan of Homesense. Can’t believe that peg board was £4 what a bargain.

    1. I love it! I love your space. I love that is in a little nook. I would think that help to bring focus to your work. (I work on the kitchen table!). I love your Canva-created prints. What a great idea. And the chair is so cool. Do you file your papers in the same room? Even though I do a ton online, I still always have paper stacks everywhere!

      1. Glad you like it! When I used to work in an office I was terrible for printing everything off onto paper! But now I don’t have a printer so I don’t really have so many stacks of paper. I make up for it in hand-written notes and to do lists everywhere though! 🙂

    1. I get you, I like to be real close when “putting the face on” lol, it’s way more comfortable for me. I like the dressing table before as well, it’s lovely, but you did a great job, turning it into your office spot! The little nook is perfect for it and I think with the printables and little details everywhere it looks like you’re gonna get a lot of work done here!

      1. Thanks Katrin! I’m glad you’re with me on getting close to the mirror – I don’t really get dressing tables to be honest! Glad you like it x

    1. This home office is beautiful! I have to say, I’m a bit jealous! My office is the couch, with one baby in my lap, another trying to help me type and a third who keeps handing me books to read to her. 😉 I wouldn’t trade them for anything, of course, but a nice quiet space would be nice now and then. 😉

    1. Wow! I am so envious of your office space it looks amazing! I really love the colour scheme and especially the wall colour! (My favourite colour) I wish we had a nook so we could do something like this!

Thanks so much for linking up to #KCACOLS I hope to see you back again on Sunday xx

    1. Natalie, I love your space! The colors are clean and calming, you can be so creative in this corner. And I’m dying for that ghost chair, I want them for my dining table, love them. We have a lot of the same taste in decor. My desk/office is very similar to yours, white desk with black and white accents, my walls are a blue too. LOL I love your art, and the quotes, whatever inspires you needs to have it’s own space in your creative nook! I love it.

      1. Thanks so much Nikki! It really is lovely to have my own space to work in. The ghost chair is so practical – we have them in our kitchen too, which is perfect for Taylor’s booster seat with all of the food she throws around! How funny that our tastes are so similar, I love black and white accents in any room x

    1. Oh I love this! It looks beautiful!! You really have an amazing taste! I think Natalie that you should be a decorator. I will happily hire you to do any of my rooms!! LOL BTW, I’m crying inside to see that you don’t want your dresser anymore!! It is my dream to have that exact dresser from Ikea but unfortunately I don’t have the space to have one!! Hopefully one day if we move to a bigger place! Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS, 🙂 x

      1. Haha, oh no! Now I’m feeling sorry for the dresser! But not much use I guess if I couldn’t really use it – I think it must be just me who needs to get right up in my grill when putting on my mascara! Glad you like the office, I’m loving having my own little work space now 🙂 xx

    1. How beautiful, amazing job! I desperately need my own desk area and this one is so inspiring. I think anything bright & airy makes it much easier to work in. Thanks for linking up to #MarvMondays! Kaye xo

      1. Thanks so much Kaye, good luck on getting your own desk space – I’m sure your design will be fab x

    1. #muminbrum love this wall colour soz if you have already posted this but what colour did you use on the walls ??

    1. Your home office looks so lush and calm, good choice of colours and i love your prints. Definitly giving me inspiration on new things I can add to my work space x
