As the parent blogging world seems to slow down over the summer holidays I thought I’d take a step back myself and use the time to re-evaluate the blog and update it to a new look. The new theme has been live for over a month now, but I’ve only just got around to writing about it!
A new look
The truth is, I loved my old theme…but I also love change and I do like to tinker with my blog from time to time. I was tentatively looking at new themes for an age, but just couldn’t find anything I liked more than the one I already had! So I did um and ah for quite some time before I finally took the plunge.
I have to admit that I forgot what a headache it is updating your site and totally revamping its look – that horrid moment when you first install it and everything just seems to disappear!! Definitely a heart in mouth moment! I wanted a theme that was bold but also clean and stylish and I was keen for something that was a little bit different. I also wanted something that was highly visual (since it’s a never ending quest of mine to improve my photography!) and I wanted a prominent area for featured posts. We got there in the end and I have to say that I’m pretty pleased with it on the whole – aside from a few teething issues (featured post image/ no featured post images/ duplicate images?…) What do you think?
A (slightly) new direction
Behind the scenes I’ve also been thinking a lot about the direction for the blog. The thing I love about being a blogger and running your own blog is that you can choose to do whatever you want with it. You can write about what you want, change direction whenever you want and put as much or as little time into it as you want, when you want. I’ve already wrote about my plans to be ‘more present‘ on my blog visually, and I also have plans to expand on the lifestyle posts – especially now that Taylor’s at nursery (soon to be three days a week) and I’m rediscovering my sense of self again beyond being a stay at home mum. Of course the parenting posts will keep on coming, but I’m also keen to dedicate more time to some of my other loves.
I’ve absolutely loved the last 20 months I’ve spent at home with my awesome baby girl (okay, perhaps the last 16!), but I also seem to have lost a part of me along the way. I haven’t finished a book in the last nine months. I can’t remember the last time I cooked a dish from a recipe, and I couldn’t tell you the last time I felt good (like really good) in a new outfit. So here’s what you can expect to find on Mum in Brum in the near future.
Fashion & Style
I’m not a trend setter and I certainly don’t pretend to be a style icon. But I really do love autumn/winter fashion and I feel very excited about rediscovering a sense of style that will (hopefully) make me feel good about my wardrobe once again. I’ll be posting about some of my new outfits, best buys, and generally getting back my style mojo!
I even bought myself a new coat last week!
Family recipes and cooking tips
I’ve always been passionate about cooking and eating fresh, and used to regularly post some of my favourite practical, family recipes. This dropped off when cooking became about the fastest meal to put on the table (certainly no time to photograph it!) I’m determined to get back into cooking and hope to start sharing my culinary tips and discoveries with you once again.
I’ve learnt everything I know about blogging through reading blogging tips from other established bloggers. I’ve also shared a few of my own blog learnings and plan to continue sharing anything I think will be helpful or inspire others in their craft.
Freelancing and self-promotion
I’ve recently joined forces with my hubby in his retail business. It was going from strength to strength and he very suddenly needed me to help with expansion plans! So I’ve currently taken a step back from the freelancing to help with business development, marketing, PR – and anything else I can turn my hand to. It’s exciting times for us and I’m actually loving it (even if we do clash heads sometimes!) On the blog I’ll still be continuing to share my tips for freelancers and also my general tips for self promotion, organisation, starting your own business and getting noticed – drawing from my ten years of working in PR, marketing, publicity and this new venture of ours.
Of course my blog wouldn’t be the same without my motherhood ramblings. They’re going nowhere.
Did I mention that I may even start a vlog??
So here’s to the next chapter – I hope you’ll join me for the journey. x
