I’m not one for always looking glamorous, but I also admit that I would NEVER leave the house without ‘my face on’. I just don’t feel like ‘me’ and ready to face the world until I’ve applied my make-up.
But as a busy mum I also don’t have the time to apply numerous lotions and potions and I keep my make-up routine fairly basic. In fact, I find the whole process of applying makeup (and then taking it off at the end of the day!) quite tedious, so prefer to keep the number of items I use and the time it takes to a minimum.
Over the years I’ve learned that it’s better to invest in a couple of go-to quality make-up products, rather than having a makeup bag full of cheaper ones you barely use. On the other hand, I do still have a couple of favourite high street brands that I always go back to – Maybelline mascaras being a particular favourite!
Here are my top beauty products that I simply couldn’t go without.
Estee Lauder Double Wear Light Foundation
I was first introduced to Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Foundation for my wedding. I did my own makeup and a friend recommended it – I haven’t looked back since! I’ve since switched to the Light version as I found the original a little too thick for everyday use. Both of them do a great job of hiding my imperfections and they definitely do stay put all day long.
L’oreal Paris True Match Touche Magique Concealer
Since my teenage years I’ve always struggled to keep the dark circles around my eyes under control – and they’ve only got worse since becoming a mum! I’ve always relied on this illuminating concealer which does a brilliant job of making me look fresh, even when I’m literally crying for sleep inside! I’ve tried a lot of the more expensive brands but find that the consistency is either too thin (so the coverage isn’t good enough) or too thick (so that you get that cakey finish that gathers in your creases). This one is just right and lasts the entire day.
Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Powder
Again, this was another product I used on my wedding day and one I haven’t been able to give up since. I like to use a powder just to set my foundation and help control my shiny areas. But I really dislike that false powdery finish that you get from most of the cheaper brands. Since this one is very finely milled, it’s pretty much invisible yet does a great job of reducing shine and helping your skin look more flawless.
I’ve only recently discovered Wunderbrow and I literally feel like a new woman. Okay, slight exaggeration, but where have I been all this time whilst everyone else was in the know?? This product is AMAZING and somehow manages the impossible task of filling in all of those gaps, matching my eyebrow hair colour, looking completely natural and lasting the entire day (or up to three if you don’t take it off). Apparently it’s all to do with the ‘PermaFix Gel Technology’ which locks colour and tiny hair fibers to the skin to give you thicker and more defined eyebrows. If, like me, you have shit eyebrows that you totally over-plucked as a teenager, then you need this in your life.
L’oreal Paris Le Blush
I’ve always been a self-confessed blusher whore and really don’t feel like my face is anywhere near complete until I have a pop of blusher on my naturally colourless cheeks. I discovered this one by fluke after I purchased it as an emergency (temporary) buy when my trusty old Mac blusher ran out. To my surprise I wasn’t in any hurry to replace it and was pretty smug that I’d found a blusher that stays put all day for under a tenner. I’ve been using it for at least a year now and there’s no going back.
Urban Decay Naked Eye Shadow Palette
Another recommendation from a good friend…This is the only eye shadow palette you’ll need to take you from day to night with a great range of natural tones to more dramatic for the evening. You can build up the colours to reach the desired effect you’re after and you can guarantee that they will last until you wash them off with no creasing or fading over the course of the day or night.
Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm
I’m not claiming this is an amazing product – it’s not and it does definitely need multiple applications throughout a day. However, I am a serial lip balm applier. I always need my lips to feel like they’re not exposed and I can’t really get on with lipstick which seems to dry out my lips or lip gloss which I just want to wipe off…if like me you like having a lip balm to hand this is a great option for adding a little colour to your lips and making you look more made up than your usual Carmex. (However, if you want the best lip balm in the world, use Lansinoh Nipple Cream. You can thank me later…)
Bobbi Brown Blush Brush
I had to include this just because I’ve had mine for almost ten years now and it’s still as good as new. Make up brushes are most definitely worth investing in if you don’t want to end up replacing them every year (or end up picking loose bristles from your face each day!). This award winning one picks up just the right amount of product and enables you to easily build up your blush without overdoing it in the first stroke. If you’re after a great range of brushes to invest in, I’d definitely recommend the Bobbi Brown range as a winner.
