When we moved into our new home last summer, we knew that we would want to give the living room an update. It had green carpet, an old fashioned gas fireplace and dark wooden windows. We wanted to create a light, modern grey living room with sleek furnishings and a relaxing, calm feel. So after updating the kids rooms, the living room soon became our next project.
A grown-up room
The kids have pretty much overrun our house, and since we are creating a sofa area in our new kitchen, we decided to make the living room somewhere the hubs and I can escape to in the evening – away from the toys and the clutter of family life! Once we came to this decision, we chose to opt for luxury over practicality, which was something of a novelty!
The room obviously needs dressing with wall art, accessories and other furnishings (although if it was up to the hubby it would be staying exactly as it is!), but I thought I’d share some photos of our new modern grey living room so far…
50 shades of grey!
I love grey as a neutral colour and literally can’t help myself from using it in almost every room. I think I may have every shade of grey in tester pots around our house (if you want to know which ones have blue, yellow, green undertones – I’m your girl!) and I obsessed over which ones to use for our walls and woodwork. In the end I settled on Dulux Pebble Shore for the walls, Goose Down for the skirting boards and interior door, and Urban Obsession for the other woodwork.
I’m not 100% sure about the door handles we ordered and think door knobs would’ve been in better keeping with the house. But unfortunately we purchased them for the entire house and every time I mention them the husband looks at me like he may bury me in the garden…so that’s that then! I do however love the window handles which have replaced the previous brass ones.
We also chose a textured wallpaper for a feature wall, which we love.
A modern fireplace
Our main investment was the three sided glass fireplace, which set the tone for the rest of the modern decor. We had to extend the chimney breast to enable the sides to be exposed, so we chose to also recess our TV into the wall at the same time. We also invested in a Dolby Atmos sound bar so that we can have the cinema experience at home (the sound is incredible!) The end result is the perfect room for us to relax, watch films and catch up on our favourite box sets.
Lighting and furnishings
We decided on round silver lights for the ceiling and Astro feature wall lights, which we painted the same colour as the walls. Both were bought online from Jessica Jones Lighting.
Our velvet silver sofa and coffee table was from Lee Longlands in Birmingham. We fell out of love with our previous sofa as it wasn’t deep enough for us to cuddle up on and it was more of a sitting up sofa than a lying down one. Like most parents, all we want to do on an evening is get comfy and lie back, so we were on the hunt for the ultimate comfy sofa! This is by far the nicest and comfiest sofa we’ve ever had – I literally struggle to take myself to bed on an evening!
New soft-touch carpet, velvet blinds and subtly patterned curtains completes the room. All that’s left now is accessorising – which we’ll probably get around to in another twelve months!
